Matcha Byron Bay began in July 2022 at the Byron Bay Farmers Market, inspired by Ayumu’s love of tradition and his desire to share something real and meaningful with the local community. Our mission is simple: to serve matcha with intention, authenticity, and heart.

Nestled in the birthplace of Japanese green tea, Ujitawara Town in Kyoto is renowned as one of the primary production regions of Uji tea. With its misty mornings, rich natural surroundings, and ideal climate—marked by sharp temperature differences between day and night and well-drained coal-rich soil—this region produces tea of exceptional quality.
Our tea is grown with great care, using only organic fertilizers and no chemical pesticides, to ensure a product that is not only kind to the body but also safe and trustworthy. We invite you to experience the rich aroma and deep flavour of our organically cultivated tea, grown with dedication and respect for nature.

Meet the Founder
Inspired by his grandmother’s tea ceremony practice, Ayumu grew up with a deep respect for authentic Japanese tea culture. He arrived in Australia in 2018, driven by a desire to explore the world — and catch some waves. When he discovered Byron Bay, it quickly stole his heart. He also noticed that many cafés served matcha that lacked the quality, care, and flavour he had known all his life.
That’s when he set out to bring the true taste of matcha to the Byron Bay community. By combining premium Uji matcha from Kyoto — his grandmother’s hometown — with locally sourced milk and honey, Matcha Byron Bay offers a meaningful fusion of Japanese tradition and Australian flavour.
Today, Ayumu is proud to share the rich, authentic flavour of Japanese matcha and watch his passion grow into something people genuinely enjoy.
